The Leader

I read the following by Mike White - PepsiCo International's Chairman and CEO. White shared what he considers the critical characteristics of good leaders.

I also see these as a valuable guideline for daily life. We’re the Leader in our own life.

1. All good leaders have perspective. They simplify problems, ask the right questions, and balance long and short-term interests. They listen more than they talk. Good leaders "need to be able to cut through the clutter and come up with a solution."

2. Successful leaders turn strategy into results. They face reality and adjust plans to achieve their goals. They motivate people and are decisive, adhering to the 70-30 rule : If you have 70% of the information it's time to make a decision because "if you hold out for the last 30% you're probably toast."

3. Great leaders have the courage to make changes, even when things are good.

4. Effective leaders are self aware and savvy. They know how to read people and they flex their style to achieve results.

5. True leaders have unshakeable integrity. They set the moral tone and ethical standard of an organization. They ask for help and seek the council of others.

6. Proven leaders know how to build strong teams. A leader's ability to recognize potential in others and foster it builds successful organization.

To start with, I'm so happy to see you back again, including with nice comments on my blog!! We were a bit worried!

Probably good advice and, as you said, you can try to apply them also for your personal life. (As I have just retired, this is where I today could possibly make use of similar advice.)

Perhaps one remark: Many of the very big bosses remain often on their job only for a short time and then they are more or less kindly asked to leave, in general with an enormous compensation. The more and closer contact I have had with these people, I must say that very few (but some) have impressed me. Would you agree that they sometimes are "overrated" and also "overpaid"?

I wish my bosses fell under the category of good leaders. But, alas, they don't.

Great post Pink, all very true .. welcome back by the way :)

I wish most CEO's and National Leaders would read and adhere to this list, unfortunately they are greedy selfish people who step on people who try to give them advise.

I too must say that most of the corporate bigwigs I have come in contact with, need to read White's guidlines.

Alas, too many do not practice what they preach.

peter - thanks for your concern, am doing fine.
I believe in 'contact'. To know more people, your contact is an asset that you can bring it with you wherever you go, even though when you've ask to leave the organization.

david - nice to meet you.

matt - you're back to blogger world too... don't you leave us again !!

TC - politic is part of the game, everyone needs to play it right.

hale mckay - I learn to practice the 70:30 rules after reading white's guideline and achieved a positive results. I can't agree more.

Great to see you posted again! I was getting worried.

I find #3 interesting. In my epxerience with corporations I haven't found too many top management people afraid to make changes when things are good. But, I've found many many management types who REFUSE to make changes when things are bad.

Admitting when you are wrong would be a pretty good quality for a leader to have. Most top government and corporate types don't have that ability.

alves - nice to see you again.

dave - thanks and have a good weekend.

azer - where you going? enjoy your vacation.

mike - you're always welcome.

krystyna - was very busy lately, I miss my blogger friends too. Thanks for nice words krystyna, have a nice weekend.

TC - so much fun visiting your blog, i enjoy it.

jay - in my opinion, majority are resistance to change, but those who wanted to be ahead of others would make changes frequently, look at how fast the technology are changing.

No such thing as BORN Leaders, yes some people have that ability internally to pick up stuff faster,,BUT LEADERS can be developed as long as they are WILLING to Grow and flex...and don't mind making mistakes, a lot of them--lol

Fail ur way to the top applies to all great Leaders!!

great post, I do think we all have leadership qualities, but we are bogged down with day to day activities..

Great Leaders are visionary, they can look into future 10-20-30 years down the road. The set up an ambition, goal to achieve in life then they continue work towards achieving it. I think key is to Set an ambition then never compromise on the ambition itself, but always compromise for it.

Thanks Ginger for sucha great post. how have you been??

defiant_infidel said...

Nice! How cool that you publish something regarding the lost art of leadership. Now if we could convince the leaders in various positions, big and small, to read and heed your words!

Best regards to you, PG!

By default, I would doubt everything a hardcore corporate CEO states. More along the lines of effective leaders devise AP accounts to pay off their vacation homes and support their drug habits, not to mention mistresses.
